THATCamp Louisiana 2017 http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org Just another THATCamp site Wed, 22 Mar 2017 22:57:18 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.12 Story Maps http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/2017/03/22/story-maps/ Wed, 22 Mar 2017 22:57:18 +0000 http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/?p=159

Given this year’s theme (DH tools for digital storytelling), I would like to propose a session on how maps can be used to tell a story. Specifically, I would like to discuss Esri’s “Story Map” web application, which is free and does not require any programming. I’m open to a merger with another session dealing with alternative ways to tell a story, or a standalone demo/workshop style session.

I look forward to meeting all campers!

DH Tools for Digital Storytelling http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/2017/03/13/dh-tools-for-digital-storytelling/ http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/2017/03/13/dh-tools-for-digital-storytelling/#comments Mon, 13 Mar 2017 21:08:44 +0000 http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/?p=155

I would like to propose a session dedicated to the sharing of (and perhaps tinkering with) tools that DHers, teachers, and researchers can use for digital storytelling. What platforms, tools, or ideas are out there for us to use? I am also interested in ways archival collections can be used in digital storytelling and how DH curricula can include primary sources. Are there applications that provide good examples of digital storytelling using primary/archival documents?

The DiRT Directory (dirtdirectory.org) is a good list of tools, but it’s difficult to find a lot of these tools in practice or have the time to familiarize oneself with the tools in order to use them in teaching/learning environment. Perhaps in the grander scheme of things, we could discuss the possibilities of using a tool and collaborating on a digital storytelling project.

Institutional Repository http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/2017/03/13/institutional-repository/ Mon, 13 Mar 2017 17:01:09 +0000 http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/?p=152

I would like to propose a session discussing Bepress. University of Louisiana at Lafayette is proposing to adopt and implement Bepress for our institutional repository. The repository will be a space for faculty and students to post and organize their work (articles, projects, electronic theses etc.) so they can be made available on a global scale. The benefits of a digital repository include efficient access and visibility of work, providing a central home for our scholarship, and increasing the value of the University.

I would like to introduce Bepress to the group and explain how we feel this will help achieve our goals. I would also like to open the discussion up and have the group provide their input and what they would like to see in our institutional repository.

Thank you.

Multimedia Digital Stories http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/2017/03/09/multimedia-digital-stories/ Thu, 09 Mar 2017 00:02:38 +0000 http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/?p=147

In preparation for THATCamp Louisiana 2017, I would like to propose a session that discusses the possibilities for multimedia digital stories. I teach a digital storytelling course where students create videos that tell stories to support the mission of professional organizations. The English course emphasizes the features of a story and visual media, especially video. I use video as the delivery mode, but wonder if I am too narrowly defining digital storytelling. I am interested in exploring other multimodal delivery methods for digital stories (Scalar, long-form web essays, etc.).  If participants are interested in discussing some different publishing platforms, I would be happy to lead a discussion.

In addition, I would be interested in a general discussion on how participants use digital stories. What goals do digital storytellers have for their creations? Are they used to share knowledge, advocate for a cause, as a vehicle for creative expression, etc.?

I look forward to discussing digital storytelling at THATCamp Louisiana. Hope to see you there.

Digital Storytelling, March 25 http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/2016/12/12/digital-storytelling-march-25/ http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/2016/12/12/digital-storytelling-march-25/#comments Mon, 12 Dec 2016 00:14:13 +0000 http://louisiana2017.thatcamp.org/?p=140

We are very excited to announce that the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will host its third THATCamp on Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 9:00AM to 5:00PM on the main campus.

In 2017, we will focus on Digital Storytelling, the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories.  We will explore its defining features, products, and various uses, emphasizing how digital tools have changed how people tell, listen, read, share, and preserve stories. The discussion may include – but are not limited to – topics such as:

  • Oral history
  • Mapping tools and storytelling
  • Preserving stories (archives and storytelling)
  • Social media, sharing stories
  • Web-based stories
  • Digital Apps
  • Digital storytelling and cultural institutions (museums, libraries…)
  • Uses in education (teaching through digital storytelling)
  • Community projects
  • Emotions and storytelling
  • Economy, marketing, tourism
  • Materials needed for the creation of storytelling

This blog will cover any updates or relevant information leading up to and following the event. Be sure to check back on us as more gears are put into motion. Until then, go to THATcamp.org or send you questions to cauvin@louisiana.edu. See you in March!
